CONSTUCTION- MAKING THE FRONT ALBUM COVER

After adding the finishing touches to the photo cloning, we then had to focus on the title, and most importantly the font. We went on the website 'Dafont' in which we took the font called 'Colleged' and used it to our advantage. The font had this rugged, gritty and urban feel which we felt work in correlation with the brick wall in the back ground. While this proving effective the font is also bold, which makes it that more effective.
After taking the original photographs (shown below) we then photo cloned and merged them together to create this effective looking front cover, which mimics the main use of stop motion throughout our music video.

CONSTRUCTION- GENRE ALBUM COVER ANALYSIS

For Fij's genre of Indie/Rock we looked at similar bands of that genre and analysed their album covers in order to determine what code and conventions are established. For all three album covers the artists themselves are seen on it often in a full body shot, however this differs from the Pop album covers where there is typically a close up. Often the band members are engaging in conversation or activity.

The band Mumford and Sons interestingly still use this full body shot but instead inside the shop windowgiving the consumer a challenge in trying to identify them. The band most likely would have found that this particular place captured the essence of their album and found it fitting in representing their image.

However, for the Indie gene it is hard to pin pointcode and conventions for album covers since as a "Indie" band they will often try to express their individuality.
They will break boundaries which gives our cover for Fij many opportunity's in being creative in representing our image.

EXAM-NARRATIVE

Narrative- Black Rose

The definition of narrative as a ‘chain of events in a cause-effect relationship occurring in time’ can be applied to my AS piece ‘Black Rose’, a psychological thriller opening based on a mentally disturbed patient out on patrol. Huge hints thoughtfully planted in place reveal her back story of criminal acts towards children. From this, the opening focuses on how this obscure back story will lead on to further events of gruesome and sinister crime by our female protagonist Natalie. Once evaluating this and thinking about the narrative involved in this piece it became clear that the conventions of ‘narrative’ made up of Propp, Barthes, Levi Straus and Todrov revolved quite similarly around my AS piece and seemed to fit quite nicely into place.

Our group discussed the matter of creating and effective diegesis so that it would be significant in making the narrative of our production that much stronger. The diegesis is the internal world created by the story that the characters themselves experience and encounter. The internal world that is said in the diegesis is created through our protagonist, Natalie. Natalie’s secret hideaway, the eerie woods in which she walked and the numerous flashbacks that shows the audience her disturbed past reveals that this, and through Natalie the internal world is created. Vladimir Propp’s theory of Narrative is clearly used throughout. His theory includes how characters take on the role of narrative ‘spheres of action’ or functions. As of this theory, Natalie fits as the role of the villain and that there are clear cut intentions to commit crime throughout the opening sequence. The Doctor plays the role of the hero seeing as he is speaking directly to the audience when stating, “He was one of the few that got to look into her disturbed mind” and that, “Natalie is one of the most deranged patients I have encountered yet”. As of this he has tried to stop the evil within the villain. This therefore concludes that Propp’s theory is correct and shows a main focus in our film opening.

A very effective way in which we produced our film was with the use of Barthes’ idea of semiotics, which conveys symbolist messages throughout. The title ‘The Black Rose’ its self is key in prophesying the narrative to later come, seeing as a red rose displays love, but instead the rose is black and displaying a evil and twisted nature. Almost how good is turning evil. The colour correct used throughout to make the footage blue is also another example of trying to display this cold and twisted feel to the piece to the audience viewing. As of this the codes and convention of Barthes’ semiotics is another main attribute alongside the idea of binary opposites of good and evil seen to be the leading factor of narrative by Levi Strauss. Although the battle between good and evil is subtle throughout it is a strong underlying feature that holds the main body of the narrative together, seeing as the doctor (hero) is trying to overcome the evil inside Natalie (villain).  Although Strauss’ theory isn’t the most important in comparison to both Barthes and Propp’s it is still evident that binary opposites are included within the ‘Black Rose’.

The opening of the ‘Black Rose’ holds another technique that furthers the narrative of the piece. Flashbacks used gives the narrative a less linear feel seeing as it adds dimensions and layers into the story and plot. Todrov expresses how narratives are usually a structure of five stages, starting from the equilibrium and going through a series of events of disruption before finally returning back to the equilibrium state. Throughout the Black Rose opening, it begins as an equilibrium when she is working in a flower shop on parole. But as the sequence progresses the old habits’ of evil and criminal tendencies begin to come back and through this the opening is setting up a clear path to future disruption. A clash between good and evil.

Theorists came significantly into play when regarding the three stages of research, planning and constructing of the physiological film opening.  When planning the film opening we came to the conclusion that we needed to have strict and significant character styles in place which were also key in showing a conflict they have to defeat. All the theorists shown above show features that have proved essential to make the narrative as strong as possible.

RESEARCH- BAND STYLING

The following pictures are from the Urban Outfitters Blog and I found them fitting in achieving the star image we are trying to reflect into lead singer Jonny.

Checkered and Branded Shirt paired with Dark Washed Jeans
Baseball jacket, Layered Sweaters and T-Shirts.
Both seen wearing light suede shoes.

Bennie Hats worn, Indie style represented through
Aztec pattern.

RESERACH- GENRE ALBUM COVER ANALYSIS

I think the study of Representation is key in understanding Album Cover Design.

For Fij's genre of Indie/Rock we looked at similar bands of that genre and analysed their album covers in order to determine what code and conventions are established. For all three album covers the artists themselves are seen on it, however this differs from the Pop album covers where there is typically a close up. Instead, it tends to be a full body shot of the band members engaging in conversation or activity.

The band Mumford and Sons interestingly still use this full body shot but instead inside the shop window giving the consumer a challenge in trying to identify them. The band most likely would have found that this particular place captured the essence of their album and found it fitting in representing their image through the shop window.

However, for the Indie gene it is hard to pin point code and conventions for album covers since as a "Indie" band they will often try and make a statement in expressing their individuality. They will often break boundaries which provides our cover for Fij with many opportunity's. It gives our group the ability to be as creative as possible in representing image and essence of the band.

RESEARCH- CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF AN ALBUM COVER

- Bold and Simplistic Fonts
- Few Characters
-Simplistic Design and Colour Scheme
- Images or tone representative of music on album
- Close-ups of the artist themselves
- Arty picture work to attract the eye of the consumer
- Bold and strong colours to again catch the eye of the target audience

Album Covers will often focus on the artists image and the their genre. They have the purpose of establishing the artist's image which can be done through close-up's making the album more personal. By picking features that are characteristic of the artist, consumers will associate the album with them. Artists will also often promote their album through direct address in which they simply just have their name across the album in order to be recognised more simply.

CONSTRUCTION- SHOT LIST FOR SKATEBOARDING SCENE

SHOT LISTS FOR DIRECTOR

- Establishing Shot

-Panning Shot

-Tilt up and Down

- Extreme Close Up Shot

- Mid Shot

-Over the Shoulder Shot when friends meet

- Point of View Shot

-Cut- In Shot

The more variety in shots will mean the more dimension the scene will have for our music video.

This video that I personally made is just an example of some of the camera shots that our skateboard scene will consist of. From this I myself have the experience of putting together the skatebaord scene in a professional and montage like mannor.

RESEARCH: BUG

BUG is a music video showcase presenting " The Evolution of Music Videos". It provides comments on not only music video's but also colourful youtube video's. Creater Knight comments its like 'going round to a friends house and having him open his laptop to show you the interesting and amusing things he's found or made'. Along with co-producer Buxton,
Knight has set up BUG with the intention of presenting interesting music video productions with the intention of interesting others.

However, I stongly believe that BUG can serve as a useful platform to learn about the numerous different code and conventions of music videos, and therefore from this it is a credible and effective research tool in furthing the construction of my music video.
